The Chillón River is an important river in western Peru. It gets its water from melting ice in the high glaciers of the Andes mountains. The river flows all the way to the Pacific Ocean coast in the Callao Region.
The river's water level goes up during the summer months, from December to March. The valley around the Chillón River is very fertile, meaning it's great for growing crops. People have lived in this valley for over ten thousand years. We know this from old tools and buildings found by archaeologists.
Ancient History of the Chillón River Valley
The Chillón River valley has a rich history. Many different native cultures have called this area home for thousands of years. Their ancient settlements and artifacts tell us a lot about how they lived.
El Paraíso: An Ancient City
One amazing ancient site is called El Paraíso. These ruins are about 4,000 years old. They are located about 40 kilometers northeast of Lima in the Chillón River Valley.
Archaeologists have found a temple at El Paraíso that might be even older, possibly 5,000 years old! If this date is confirmed, it would make El Paraíso one of the oldest known sites in the world. It would be as old as the famous ancient city of Caral, which is about 200 kilometers north along the coast. These discoveries help us learn more about early human history in Peru.
