The Quechua people are a large group of native communities living in South America. They are known for speaking a language called Quechua. Most Quechua people live in countries like Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. They have a rich history and culture that has been passed down through many generations.
In Ecuador, the Quechua-speaking groups call themselves Kichwas or Quichuas. Their language is also called Kichwa. In Colombia, the Kichwa-speaking group is known as the Ingas.
Famous Quechua Groups
Many different groups are part of the larger Quechua family. Some of these groups have played important roles in history.
- The Inca people were a very powerful group. They built a large empire in ancient South America.
- The Chancas lived in areas like Huancavelica and Ayacucho in Peru.
- The Huancas lived in Junín. They spoke Quechua even before the Incas did.
- The Cañaris lived in Ecuador. They learned the Quechua language from the Incas.
